Have you heard of the new parenting trend where parents never say the word "no" to their children? The reasoning I've heard is that children learn to rebel against the word, so to curb rebellion, parents simply don't say no.

Cam doesn't say no to Lily on Modern Family.

Of course children rebel against it! But it's not the word "no" that they rebel against. They just like the idea of pushing boundaries and exploring consequences. Children will do this whether or not you say no.

I think this method is extreme. I think it's setting your child up for an entitled attitude and lack of boundaries. They'll never learn what's right and wrong. You can't always say "yes," otherwise your children will become adults who can't deal with criticism, have a sense of entitlement (or even greed), and have no desire to follow rules.

What do you guys think of the trend? Does it have merit? Do any of you practice this method? If so, enlighten those of us who just don't get it!

  1. I've heard of this before & I personally think it's totally nuts! I've watched enough Dr.Phil episodes to see how never saying no affects a child. Our baby girl will definitely be hearing the word NO! ;)

    1. Oh, so will my kids. I think consistent discipline is way less damaging to children than giving too much freedom.

  2. If I didn't say no to my kids, they would drink Mountan Dew for breakfast and use our puppy as a kickball. I think it's safe to say this trend is bogus! :)

  3. Isn't the main goal of parenting to raise children that become productive members of society? If you are "religious" it's to also raise God fearing children? How can you adopt this philosophy when the world is filled with "no"... no you didn't get into that college, no you didn't get that job, no that girl won't marry you, no you can't but a 4 million dollar house... It seems this would just make for a huge therapy bill in my opinion as well as some super bratty children.
And cam and lily don't count because he's hysterical and wears pink like nobodys business!!

    1. Exactly! I don't see any scenario where the children would turn out with normal boundaries and expectations of life. A kid who never hears the word "no" in the home would never learn how to deal with the negativity in the world.

  5. I could understand why not just wanting to use NO all the time. I actually try and use other words. My friends daughter says no a million times a day now and knows what it means.

  7. I'm not a parent, so I'm obviously not up on the trends very much... but I definitely don't get this one. How do they get around telling their kid "No" when they're being naughty or doing something potentially dangerous? I don't get it...

    1. Exactly! I don't have kids either, but I know I will certainly say "no" when it's required.
